Best Buy Shutters Iconic Location After 30 Years: 25 More Stores to Close Nationwide

According to The Sun, A popular Best Buy location in Gaithersburg’s 270 Center is set to close its doors for good on October 26, marking the end of an era after 30 years in operation. This closure is part of a broader trend as Best Buy continues to assess its store portfolio, with CEO Corie Barry indicating that 10 to 15 additional locations could be shuttered in 2024 and potentially the same number in 2025.

Customer Reactions

Shoppers at the Gaithersburg location have shared mixed reactions to the news. Many voiced their disappointment in the store’s changing inventory over the years. One shopper commented, “When they stopped selling movies, that’s when I stopped shopping there,” while another lamented the loss of products that used to drive foot traffic. The sentiment was echoed by others who believe the retailer has lost its way, with one customer stating, “Best Buy hasn’t been best for a long time now.”

Company Response and Future Closures

In an earnings call, CEO Corie Barry explained that Best Buy is trying to balance its workforce with consumer interests amid changing spending habits and economic challenges. CFO Matthew Bilunas confirmed that the company would continue to close traditional stores as leases come up for renewal, emphasizing the need to adapt to evolving market conditions.

The company has already closed locations in various states, including California, Colorado, Ohio, Minnesota, Missouri, and Virginia. While the Gaithersburg store closes, shoppers can still visit nearby Best Buy locations in Germantown and Rockville.

Sales Challenges

Best Buy has been facing challenges with its sales, as evidenced by a reported revenue drop from $9.6 billion to $9.3 billion in the second quarter of this year, reflecting a three percent decline. Last year, the retailer also experienced an overall revenue decrease of six percent. Barry noted that customers are increasingly seeking value in sales events while still being willing to invest in high-ticket items when new, compelling technology is introduced.

Future Directions

Despite these challenges, Barry remains optimistic about Best Buy’s future. The company is also pursuing growth opportunities in Canada, where it plans to open hundreds of Express stores in partnership with Bell Canada. These smaller locations will feature a curated selection of technology and offer services through Geek Squad for devices and gadgets, signaling a shift in the retailer’s approach to meet modern consumer needs.
