$12 Million Settlement: Clif Bar Consumers Can Claim Cash After Label Lawsuit

Consumers who purchased Clif Bars in the past decade may be eligible for a portion of a $12 million settlement due to allegations of misleading advertising.

The class action lawsuit against Clif Bar & Company accused the brand of marketing its protein bars as “nutrition for sustained energy,” which allegedly obscured the high sugar content in the products. Despite promoting that their bars contain no high fructose corn syrup, nearly 40% of the calorie content comes from added sugars, according to the lawsuit.

Filed in 2018, the complaint asserted that Clif’s labeling and packaging create a health and wellness impression, ultimately influencing pricing and sales. It also highlighted that sugar can act as a chronic liver toxin, emphasizing the need for consumers to understand the potential health effects of the ingredients.

Although Clif Bar denied any wrongdoing and no court ruling determined the validity of the claims, the company agreed to a $12 million settlement to resolve the issue.

Who is Eligible?

Anyone who purchased an Original Clif Bar or Clif Kid ZBar in California or New York between April 2014 and March 2023 can file a claim for compensation.

To receive payment, eligible consumers must submit a claim through the settlement website and provide as much relevant information as possible. Even those without proof of purchase can still receive compensation by completing the necessary claim form.

Payment Details

  • Consumers who bought up to 30 bars during the specified period can receive a $5 payment.
  • Those who purchased between 31 and 60 bars are eligible for $10.
  • If more than 61 bars were purchased, a payment of $15 can be claimed without the need for receipts.

For those with proof of purchase, receipts can be used to claim $15 for the first 60 bars, with additional purchases earning $0.25 per bar.

Claims can be submitted online or by mail. The deadline for filing claims is November 25, while those wishing to reject the settlement have until October 22 to respond. A court is scheduled to make a final decision on the settlement on November 14.
