Get $3,000: One-Time Payment Available for Americans in $5.1 Million Privacy Settlement

DOZENS of Americans are set to receive a one-time payment exceeding $3,000 as part of a $5.1 million privacy settlement stemming from claims against Magid Gloves. The settlement addresses allegations that the company violated Illinois laws by using fingerprint time clocks and thermal scanners without proper disclosures regarding the collection of biometric data.

Individuals who utilized either technology at Magid’s Romeoville facility between January 8, 2016, and August 30, 2024, will benefit from this settlement. The class action lawsuit contended that Magid Gloves failed to comply with the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) by not informing users about the data collection processes.

Although the company has not admitted any wrongdoing, it has agreed to pay a settlement of $5.175 million to resolve the allegations. Eligible individuals can expect to receive approximately $3,244.38 if they used a fingerprint scanning device, while those whose temperatures were taken using scanners may claim up to $135.26.

The deadline for excluding oneself from the settlement or submitting objections is October 29, and a final approval hearing is scheduled for December 20.

In a related development, many Americans can also claim substantial one-time payments of up to $5,000 following a £4.76 million data breach settlement involving Group 1001. This settlement arises from claims that the insurance company failed to protect its customers during a data breach in February 2023, which may have compromised sensitive information.

Eligible claimants, including Group 1001’s customers, employees, dependents, and payees, can receive up to $5,000 in reimbursement for losses related to the data breach. This includes expenses such as bank fees, communication charges, travel costs, and credit expenses, as well as compensation for up to four hours of lost time at a rate of $20 per hour.

Alternatively, class members may opt for a pro rata cash payment instead of reimbursement, with a minimum of $5 available, depending on the total number of valid claims submitted. Additionally, affected individuals will receive three years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services, which include benefits such as $1 million in identity theft insurance.

To claim the cash benefits, individuals will need to provide documentation of any losses incurred due to the data breach, including bills, receipts, and credit reports.
