“Ohio SNAP Program Updates: How New Changes Affect Your Benefits”

A significant update has arrived for Ohioans enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). On Monday, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) announced the launch of tiered benefit levels aimed at assisting members whose benefits may decline with increased income.

Matt Damschroder, director of ODJFS, explained, “Fear of losing food benefits can deter individuals from pursuing new job opportunities, working additional hours, or accepting promotions. By adopting a sliding scale approach, we’re encouraging people to increase their earnings while gradually reducing their benefits.”

Under the new system, SNAP members earning up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level will experience a gradual decrease in their monthly benefits as their income rises. This change allows SNAP recipients to accept pay raises and promotions without the immediate loss of their benefits.

“This system provides an incentive for individuals to pursue promotions and higher wages, knowing they won’t face an abrupt loss of assistance,” Damschroder added.
