“Cleveland APL Gears Up for 10th Annual Dick Goddard Telethon”

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Meet Lula, a 10-year-old pit/lab mix currently in the care of the Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL). This 60-pound dog was recently abandoned by her previous owner and is now receiving treatment and care from the APL.

“We don’t have much information about Lula’s past,” said Sharon Harvey, President and CEO of APL. “We had to treat her for an upper-respiratory infection and some fleas. Thankfully, there are no major issues, but Lula, like many other animals here, needed our support.”

Lula, along with many other dogs and cats, is awaiting adoption at the APL. The organization is calling on the community for help with the ongoing care of these animals.

Harvey highlighted the recent expansion of the APL facility, which added nearly 9,000 square feet. “We’ve transformed from just a shelter into a vital community resource,” she said.

The APL is gearing up for its 10th annual Dick Goddard APL Telethon, a key fundraising event. Workers are setting up signage and organizing the phone bank for the event, where volunteers will be ready to accept donations. Last year’s telethon raised over $193,000, bringing the total raised in the past nine years to $1.5 million.

Founded in 1912, the APL is a voluntary organization dedicated to sheltering and caring for unwanted or homeless animals. The facility operates on a daily budget of $26,000, which covers surgeries, medicine, food, and more.

“For those tuning in for the first time, we invite you to make a donation, visit our facility, and consider adopting,” Harvey added. “These animals need loving homes, and we are grateful for the community’s support.”
