The 2020 Cleveland varsity and JV baseball teams have come to play this year. With some of the seniors committed they look to have a good season make playoffs and win states. The seniors who are committed are Colby Davis, Cam Verrier, and Dawson Smith all committed to Wake Tech. Varsity is being coached by Coach Lee and Coach Runyon. The Varsity consists of nine seniors and four juniors. Varsity also has some floaters in Zach Blailock, Skyler Locklear, Dylan Smith, and Zavion Ingram.
The JV team has 20 players, but they have young talent that will be able to replace the sophomores next year. Jv head coach Chris Schmidt, who is new to Cleveland this year, wants to prepare sophomore players for varsity baseball. Well, I expect all of us to get better, especially on the JV level to prepare the players for varsity, which means identifying strengths and weaknesses and being able to work on those weaknesses and improve them. It’s really about getting the sophomores ready for so they can start on varsity one day,
When asked about his goals Schmidt said his goals for this upcoming season are, I met with each of the players one on one they identified individual goals they wanna work on. So my goal is to work with them so they reach their personal goals or improve upwards towards them. Another one of my goals is to reach our team goal, which is to win more than we lose.
Lastly, when I asked him about what his first year coaching for Cleveland has taught him, he said, “it has taught me how to grow with the athletes and parents along with the other coach. I’ve learned that there is a lot of talent out here and can’t wait to see what this year holds.
Varsity baseball went 14-10 overall and 4-6 in the GNR 3A conference in 2019, so the team will look to improve on that record after losing seven seniors. The Jv team was 13-6 and 5-3 in 2019, good enough for second in the GNR 3A conference. Both teams start the season on March 2 against Harnett Central.
