This year’s Winter Olympics feature athletes competing in 15 different sports for 102 medals.

Happening every four years, this year the Olympics are being held in Pyeongchang,South Korea. The games promote peace and unity, and North Korea being allowed in the games is a big step for unity in the world and between North and South Korea. With previous tensions between North Korea and South Korea, two countries technically still at war, and with North Korea only 60 miles south of North Korea, some people do not feel safe.

On the other hand, North Korea and South Korea have combined athletes to make full teams all going under one name, Korea. According to Reuters, Angela Ruggiero of the International Olympic Committee, suggested that the Korean women’s hockey team which includes 12 players from North Korea, should be considered for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The increased participation of North Korea in the Olympics has led to an invitation for peace talks between North Korea, South Korea and the United States. According to CNN, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in to talk peace later this year. United States Vice President Mike Pence told “Washington Post” Reporters that he and President Donald Trump are open to a peace talks with North Korea as well.

According to ‘Time,’ 586,400 tickets have been sold for this year’s games, which is roughly 60% of their sales goal. Many people blame the tensions between North and South Korea for the poor sales. Although according to CNBC, there are other factors, such as the absence of the Russia and players from the national Hockey League, which have also negatively impacted sales.
