The Lady Rams volleyball team continued their undefeated season yesterday by defeating the Spartans from Smithfield-Selma. The Rams had a strong performance winning 3-0 and keeping the Spartans from scoring 10 points in any set. This win was a true team effort with everyone playing in at least two sets.
The Rams were led offensively by the tall net front presence that is known for defense. Most attacks were set perfectly by Jenna Myer. The team was led in kills by the outside hitter, Ashley Talbot. The Spartans showed great poise on defense by digging most attacks of the Rams.
The Rams seemed to be sticking to their game plan for the majority of the match, especially while the starters were in play. Who ever received the volley from the Spartans wanted to get it to Jenna Myer, who had 23 out of the team’s 28 assists. The Spartans seemed to be flustered by the play of the Rams because they seemed to be struggling with their communication. They struggled to get set up offensively which is a must to beat this Rams team.
The Rams played great defensively, keeping the Spartans under ten points in all three sets. The Rams do not block a lot of attacks, but they are great at playing the ball off of them. The shots they did block were mostly by the tallest player on the team, Alyssa Jackson. The Rams had 35 total digs as a team with only 7 errors on digs in the whole match. Shalyn Turbyfill lead the team in digs.
The Lady Rams are a championship caliber team. This team is strong offensively, defensively, and they are well-coached. The seniors on this team are looking for more than just another conference title. They want to go out with a bang and win the whole state, and they have a serious chance to do so.
The Lady Rams face Clayton on Monday.
