Raleigh, NC– This is the first season the NHL is requiring teams to have a 5 day “bye week.” This means that during their bye week, a team cannot practice or play for five straight days. So far this season, the trend coming off of the bye week is that teams struggle to win. All NHL teams are a combined 3-8-1 coming off of their bye weeks.

The Carolina Hurricanes hope to stop this trend, as they are already 8 points out of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Hurricanes are 1-2 in their last 3 games, including a 5-0 loss in Washington. Their first game coming off the bye week is at home against the Colorado Avalanche. Colorado is the worst team in the league in terms of win/loss record.

Carolina remained within the trend of other NHL teams in losing to the Avalanche 2-1 in OT. This loss pushes the Hurricanes to last in the Eastern Conference, and it dwindles the team’s hopes when it comes to making the playoffs. If they miss out on the postseason this year, the Hurricanes will have missed the playoffs for 8 straight years
