A Cleveland Loss Sets Up A Showdown for Co-Championship

 On Thursday, April 22, the Cleveland Rams JV Softball team played against Clayton Comets. The Lady Rams took the first and, hopefully the only, loss of the season. It was a tight game throughout the whole six innings, with the game ending with a score of 5-3, Lady Comets.

Inning one

First, all three batters for the Lady Rams strike out for the top of the first. The Lady Comets’ first batter strikes out, but next up to bat was Harris, who hit a shot to left field, getting a single. She then stole second. Next up was Lewis, and she got a double on an error, scoring Harris. Gibson came up and got a single and moved Lewis to second. Lewis scored on a wild pitch. The next two batters strike out looking. 

Inning Two

Pennica was up to bat and hit a line drive to shortstop to get the first out. Martin was up and got a walk and stole second, moving into scoring position with Duck up to bat with one out. Duck hit a sacrifice bunt, moving Martin to third base. Morgan was up to bat with two outs and got a double off an error, scoring Martin. Faulkner was up and hit a line drive to shortstop ending the inning.

Martinez was up to bat for the Comets and struck out for the first out. Pankau popped out to the shortstop, Farmer, getting the second out. Dalby hit a single to Martin. Goff hit an error to first base, moving Dalby to third and herself to second base. Harris hit a blooper to right field, scoring Dalby and Goff, and moved herself to second base. Lewis popped out to end the inning.

Inning Three

Herman ground out to the third base. Evans popped out to center field, getting the second out. Farmer also grounded out to third base, ending the top of the inning.

Gibson lead off for the Comets and struck out. Traverson ground out to first base, getting the second out.  Orlowski struck out on a drop third strike. 

Inning Four

Doepp lead off for the Rams and hit a hard ground ball to first base for the first out. Pennica walked and was on first base. Pennica stole second and got to third on a passed ball. Martin hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Pennica. Duck struck out, ending the top of the fourth. Martinez hit a ground ball to third base, and Doepp got the out at first. Pankau struck out swinging for the second out. Dalby was up and grounded out to Morgan at second base, ending the fourth inning.

Inning Five 

Morgan was leadoff for the Rams and hit a single to right field, then stole second with Faulkner up with a runner now in scoring position. Faulkner struck out swinging. Herman was up and hit a single, moving Morgan to third and Herman to second. Evans was up and bunted for a single, loading the bases. Farmer hit a ground ball to shortstop, scoring Morgan, but the shortstop got the out at third, leaving Evans at second and Farmer at first. Doepp was up and hit a ground ball to third base, getting the third out of the fifth inning.

Inning Six

In the top of the sixth, the Comets got to hit one more time, scoring one more run to end the game with a 5-3 win.

The Rams fought hard but weren’t able to come out with the win. The Lady Rams still have a chance to be co-champs with Clayton if they win against the South Johnston Trojans this Thursday.
