The Rams Varsity football team dominated in the first round of the NC 3AA football playoffs beating Southern Durham 49-0. This is a big confidence booster for the Rams, and hopefully they can keep the momentum going into the next round of the playoffs against Lee County. With this win, the Rams continue their undefeated season, and they hope to stay that way through the playoffs.
Cleveland received the ball and started the game hot, as Amir Johnson rushed for a touchdown. Shuaib Zayyad made the PAT, making the score 7-0.
Cleveland tried an onside kick, and the Rams successfully got the ball back. Quickly afterwards, Skyler Locklear completed a touchdown pass to Jashawn Middleton. Shuaib Zayyad made the PAT to make it 14-0, Rams.
Cleveland kicked off to Southern Durham, and then played great defense, not even letting them get to midfield before being forced to punt. Cleveland stayed hot on offense, as Skyler Locklear rushed for a touchdown. Shuaib Zayyad made the PAT, making the score 21-0, Cleveland.
Cleveland kicked off to Southern Durham and played lockdown defense again causing the Spartans to punt. The Rams kept the hot streak going on offense as Skyler Locklear completed another touchdown pass to Jashawn Middleton. Shuaib Zayyad made the PAT making the score 28-0.
Cleveland kicked off to Southern Durham, and shortly afterwards, Leron Sparks intercepted a pass to give Cleveland the ball back as the first quarter ended.
Cleveland finally cooled down on offense causing them to punt. The Rams and Spartans exchanged turnovers giving the Spartans the ball back.
The Rams defense stayed strong causing the Spartans to punt. Cleveland got going on offense again as Skyler Locklear completed a long pass to Nick Roccia. Amir Johnson then rushed for the touchdown. Shuaib Zayyad made the PAT making the score 35-0.
Cleveland kicked off to Southern Durham, and the Rams defense still held strong as Hunter Morris got a sack and caused Southern Durham to punt again. Cleveland got down the field but couldn’t manage to score as Southern Durham got another interception.
Cleveland quickly got the ball back as they recovered a fumble by Southern Durham. The Rams capitalized on the fumble as Amir Johnson rushed for a touchdown. Shuaib Zayyad makes the PAT once again making the score 42-0 at halftime.
Cleveland kicked off to Southern Durham to start the third quarter. Isaac Piatek’s sack and the Rams defense caused Southern Durham to turn the ball over on downs.
The Rams made their way down the field, and Skyler Locklear rushed for a touchdown. Shuaib Zayyad made the PAT making the score 49-0.
Cleveland kicked off to Southern Durham. The Spartans fumbled the ball, and Noah Klimp recovered it to end the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was uneventful. Cleveland let off the gas and stopped scoring. The Spartans continued their offensive struggles and couldn’t score for the remainder of the game. The final score was 49-0, Cleveland.
After the game:
Cameron Goins said, “We showed what we can do as a team without a key component on our roster.”
Skyler Locklear said, “I think it was a great team win, and we really showed what we can do when we all play together”
Caleb Stancil said, “The game was a blow out from the start. We came out of the gates with intensity and speed and overwhelmed the other team.”
The Rams played great and the win allowed them to advance to the next round of the playoffs in which they hope to keep their undefeated winning streak going. The game will be next Friday April 23 at 7pm against the undefeated Lee County Yellow Jackets.
