New data shows that the Moderna vaccine is 94.5% effective against coronavirus. This makes it the second vaccine to have such a high success rate.
In the Moderna trial, 15,000 participants were given a placebo which is a shot of saline with no effect. As months passed, 90 of them were positive for the virus, 11 of them developing serious forms of it. This was done again with a different group of 15,000 people, and only five were positive for the virus with none of them being severely ill.
The company says that the vaccine does not have any serious side effects, and they will be applying to the US Food and Drug Administration after they gather more data in the coming months.
There will not be enough of the vaccine for everyone, so high priority groups such as health care workers, the elderly, and people who have underlying conditions will be the ones who get vaccinated first.
Unlike a lot of other vaccines, Moderna’s can be kept at 20 degrees celsius, which allows it to be distributed by doctors at doctors’ offices and pharmacies. It can also last up to 30 days in the refrigerator.
